Be Californian, Be Counted: Volunteer with the Census
January 28, 2010
There are only 8 weeks until "Be Californian, Be Counted Day" on March 20, 2010.
Why Is This So Important for Housing/Homelessness? If we get a complete count, California stands to gain millions of dollars in federal funds. Without a complete count, we stand to lose millions of dollars we otherwise would have received.
The equation is simple: Fewer Californians counted = Fewer federal funds for our state. This is no time for our state to pass on federal funds!
Why We Need YOUR Help A recent national poll indicated that as many as 1 in 5 residents are not planning to complete the easy, 10-question Census form. Many of those whom we serve fall under the "hard to reach/hard to count" category, reluctant to complete their form, unsure how to accurately complete the form, or unaware of the census and its importance all together. As a trusted messenger in your community, you can play a key role in overcoming individuals' reluctance to complete their forms.
Our Challenge to You:
- Find your local Census office. They are opening up all over the state. Go by and introduce yourself and ask what resources are available. To find your local office, check out the U.S. Census Bureau's website.
- Most communities have a Complete Count Committee. If you are not already an active participant, contact your local government representative's field office and ask about upcoming activities and how you can get involved.
Please take a few minutes today and join local efforts to make the Census a success.
