Hello Housing California Supporter,
In This Edition:
Our Ballot Recommendations: Yes on 30, No on 32
Two state propositions on the
November 6th ballot could have a significant impact on housers' policy and
advocacy work and have, therefore, earned vote recommendations from Housing
California.
Proposition
30,
the Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012,
would provide $6 billion a year in funding for schools and local public safety
through 2017 and a smaller amount through 2019.
At our Annual Conference in April,
Assemblymember Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) spoke convincingly about passing Proposition
30 to create breathing room and allow lawmakers to dedicate their time to
solving other problems facing the state -- including the housing affordability
crisis afflicting the rental market. If Prop. 30 were to fail, legislators
would instead be almost wholly focused on filling the budget hole and
generating funding for schools.
Housing California recommends
a "yes" vote on Prop. 30. For more information, see the Yes on
Prop. 30 campaign website.
Proposition
32 is a deceptive measure supported
primarily by big businesses to cripple the involvement of our organized-labor
allies in policymaking and elections. It makes it illegal to use payroll
deductions to collect funding for any political contributions, even if union members
specifically authorize those deductions in writing. Businesses, on the other
hand, can continue to use their primary channel for making contributions --
from their profits -- without restriction.
Housing California recommends
a "no" vote on Prop. 32. For more information, see the No on 32 campaign
website.

New Report Examines Rising Costs of Housing and Transportation
Just released, Losing
Ground: The Struggle of Moderate-Income Households to Afford the Rising Costs
of Housing and Transportation, is the latest publication from the Center
for Housing Policy and the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT). This
report gauges the housing and transportation cost burdens of moderate-income
households living in the 25 largest metro areas at the end of the decade. Newly
available data provides the opportunity to assess the impact on combined costs
of the rapid rise and fall of home prices during the 2000s, the recent rebound
in rents, and the nation’s increased suburbanization over the past decade. View
the report.
