New Federal Resources Available for Nonprofit Organizations

June 03, 2009

Two new federal resources are now available for nonprofit organizations.

Nonprofit Capacity Building Program
$50 Million to Increase Capacity of Nonprofit and Faith-Based Organizations to Assist Families in Economic Crisis

Administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Nonprofit Capacity Building Program will make one-time, two-year awards of up to $1 million to lead organizations that will use the funds to support other faith-based or secular nonprofit organizations. Lead organizations will collaborate with their selected grassroots organizations in distressed communities offering capacity-building activities in five critical areas: 1) organizational development, 2) program development, 3) collaboration and community engagement, 4) leadership development, and 5) evaluation of effectiveness.

Basic Center Program
$13 Million for Services for Homeless and Runaway Youth

Administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Basic Center Program (BCP) provides an alternative for runaway and homeless youth who might otherwise engage law enforcement or the child-welfare, mental-health, or juvenile-justice systems. Each BCP must provide runaway and homeless youth with a safe and appropriate shelter; individual, family, and group counseling as appropriate; and aftercare.

Additional Resources
There are also a number of expansions to housing programs and resources within the proposed budget for U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). View HUD's budget.
