Mid-Year Budget Cuts Lightly Impact HCD
February 21, 2008Last Saturday, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation to alleviate some of the state's current-year budget deficit. The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) escaped relatively unscathed, in part due to the minimal General Fund support it receives.
The signed legislation included the governor's proposed $200,000 reduction in HCD’s staff: $100,000 for one position in the Housing Element Unit and $50,000 each from the State Housing Law Program and the Enterprise Zone Program. In the latter two programs, the funds will come from vacant staff positions.
HCD expects little impact on the Housing Element Unit, because the department can shift an unfilled position in another division to this unit.
Next, budget subcommittees turn their attention to the governor's proposed budget for 2008-09.
