Legislature Seeks to Address Affordable-Home Gaps for Veterans
April 15, 2008Surveys estimate veterans comprise 25 percent of California's homeless population. With thousands of new veterans returning home every month, the challenges communities face are growing more acute. Here's a highlight of bills that would help address the lack of affordable homes for veterans:
- Assemblymember Mary Salas, (D-Chula Vista) is leading a legislative effort to expand options for veterans who need an affordable place to live. Salas is chair of the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee.
- Salas' AB 2670 authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs to apply to the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee for a tax-exempt bond allocation for rental homes. The bill also authorizes the department to issue revenue bonds to fund multifamily housing developments.
- AB 1818 (Fuentes, D-Sylmar) and SB 1220 (Cedillo, D-Los Angeles) allow the Multifamily Housing Program to fund developments limited to veterans if the development is on Veterans Administration-owned land.
- AB 3067 (Committee on Veterans Affairs) allows the Veterans Farm and Home Purchase Act to fund multifamily developments.
