Legislature Exploring Solutions to End Homelessness
April 13, 2009California is in the midst of a perfect storm for homelessness: The struggling economy, the ongoing state budget crisis that dramatically cut social services, and unemployment rates over 10 percent. While federal stimulus funds are aimed at preventing more people from becoming homeless, much more must be done at the state level to address our growing homeless population, a population that includes increasing numbers of families with children, returning veterans from Iraq/Afghanistan, and victims of the foreclosure crisis.
Fortunately, there is an effort underway to put a dent in the rising numbers of homeless by devoting more attention and resources toward solutions.
Establishing a State Interagency Council on Homelessness
AB 1177 (Fong) would be an important first step in eliminating our state's fragmented approach to homelessness by creating a comprehensive Interagency Council comprised of both state agencies and stakeholders.
