Advocacy Efforts to Create Interagency Council Shift to Governor

September 09, 2009

On Thursday, August 27th, AB 1177 (Fong) was held "on suspense" by the Senate Appropriations Committee, which means the committee did not (and will not) vote to move the bill due to its cost (estimated in committee analysis to be $125,000 this year and $250,000 in subsequent years).

The decision to hold the bill due to cost concerns is not a surprising one in this difficult economic climate; however, there were some successes, as the bill passed five legislative committees and allowed advocates to raise the profile of this important issue. Most importantly, advocacy efforts to create the council are not ending; there will be a comprehensive advocacy strategy from Housing California and the Corporation for Supportive Housing to engage the governor on the issue and ask him to establish the council via executive order. Please stay tuned for opportunities to assist in this effort in the coming weeks.
