Housing CA Weighs in on McKinney-Vento Reauthorization

March 18, 2008

Housing California has taken a support position on S. 1518, the Community Partnership to End Homelessness Act. S. 1518 would reauthorize the McKinney-Vento Act, the major piece of federal law that provides funding for homeless programs.

This week, Housing California sent a letter to Representative Maxine Waters, D-California, who represents the 35th district in Los Angeles and is Chair of the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity. This spring, the subcommittee will take up McKinney-Vento reauthorization on behalf of the Committee on Financial Services.

Our letter focuses on the importance of maintaining S. 1518's commitment to building homes that are affordable to homeless families and on expanding the current definition of "homelessness" to include those persons who are "doubled up" or in other precarious housing situations (such as those living in motels or changing residences several times over the course of a year).
