Housing California Launches Employer-Assisted Housing Network

July 22, 2008

Engaging employers in our effort to provide families with an affordable place to live makes a lot of sense. First, it benefits employers. Employers who help their employees find affordable places to live near their businesses have a much better chance of recruiting and retaining a dedicated work force. From the advocacy side, employers represent a strong political force and can lend a voice that better resonates with business Democrats and many Republicans. This could prove useful as we move closer to a Permanent Source campaign.

Which is why Housing CA was excited to launch its Employer-Assisted Housing Network. With a grant from Wachovia, Housing CA hosted the first call among practitioners of employer-assisted housing. People from all over the state -- representing housing trust funds, employers, and nonprofit developers -- participated on the first call.

The Employer-Assisted Housing Network will:

  1. Foster best practices among professionals who provide employer-assisted
    housing programs and services
  2. Promote employer-assisted housing to employers and other organizations
  3. Determine an agenda for political action

Each member of the network shares one thing in common: providing services to employees -- from life-skills training to down-payment assistance, rental assistance to affordable-home development.

Attention All Employer-Assisted Housing Providers! The Employer-Assisted Housing Network is still forming. If you provide employer-assisted housing services, please join our network, by contacting Julie Spezia (see below).
