Homelessness Coalition Co-sponsoring SB 1651
March 18, 2008Great news for PROMISE! Senator Darrell Steinberg, has agreed to include the Homes to End Homelessness Coalition as a co-sponsor of his SB 1651, the Corrections Mental Health Act of 2008. The other co-sponsor is the California Council of Community Mental Health Agencies.
SB 1651 would place the Homes to End Homelessness Coalition's top priority of PROMISE (Program for Returning Offenders with Mental Illness Safely and Effectively) into law. PROMISE is a pilot program that would reduce recidivism by providing homes with services (or "supportive homes") for mentally ill parolees exiting the state prison system. SB 1651 also would authorize the development and operation of mental health courts.
