“Hidden Agenda" Eminent Domain Measure Qualifies for Ballot

January 23, 2008

Last week, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers-backed Eminent Domain measure qualified for the June ballot. This measure has a hidden agenda to eliminate rent control and mixed-income zoning. Housing California has joined a coalition to defeat this deceptive measure. The coalition is working to give voters an alternative option for reform by qualifying a reasonable reform measure for the June ballot.

TAKE ACTION

Tell the Story!
You can help defeat Jarvis' hidden-agenda scheme by helping the "no" campaign collect stories of Californians who will be harmed or displaced by the elimination of rent control and other renter protections. The campaign is looking for the following:

  • People with an interesting history: Veterans, someone with a disability or serious illness, a single mom working two jobs, etc.
  • A strong public spokesperson that isn't afraid to speak to the media or potentially appear in TV and print ads.
  • People living in rent-controlled apartments/mobile home parks who have bad actor landlords.

Storytelling Tips:

  • Make sure the storytellers focus on what rent control protections mean to them and how losing those protections would impact their lives.
  • Ask storytellers include a lot of detail about their lives (and include pictures)! This will give those running the campaign a sense of the real people who will be affected, so the campaign can share the most compelling stories possible.
  • Get written permission to use testimonials/phones from each person who shares their story. This can be as simple as a statement sent via e-mail statement.
