Governor Signs SB 198
On July 30, 2007, Governor Schwarzenegger signed the Housing California-supported SB 198 (Battin) into law.
SB 198 expands the definition of "homeless youth" to include anyone less than 24 years old who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, is no longer eligible for foster care based on age, or has run away from home.
The previous definition only included youth aged 18-24. The passage of SB 198 allows service providers and developers who are serving homeless youth under the age of 18 to access state funding.
For example, Proposition 1C included $50 million for housing for homeless youth. The Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) is considering changes to the program regulations to increase demand for the funds. To read more about those changes, see our recent article "HCD Seeks to Increase Demand for Homeless Youth Program."
