Contact HUD and Let Them Know You Support the National Housing Trust Funding Formula

January 28, 2010

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is currently accepting comments on their proposed formula for allocating funding from the National Housing Trust Fund. California stands to fare extremely well under the proposed formula, with estimates of a Trust Fund capitalized at $1 billion, sending $193,200,000 (19.32 percent of the total) to the state. How can we help ensure $193 million comes to California?

  • TAKE ACTION! Because California favors so well in the proposed formula, we need everyone to send supportive comments to HUD, so that the funding formula remains unchanged.
    • Deadline: Comments on the formula are due by Tuesday, February 2, 2010.

Instructions for Submitting Comments: HUD prefers that comments be submitted online; in the interest of time, Housing California also recommends that you use the online form.

What's Next? The U.S. House of Representatives has already placed $1 billion for the Trust Fund in its "jobs" bill, plus an additional $65 million for project-based vouchers tied to the fund. Now, we wait to see if the Senate follows suit and includes funding for the Trust Fund in their "jobs" bill.

Draft regulations on other details of the National Housing Trust Fund implementation (for example, a list of eligible uses) are expected to release in the next 4-5 months, at which time public comments will be accepted. Housing California will keep you apprised of future developments and deadlines for submitting your comments on the draft regulations.
