Census 2010: Free Resources and Ideas for Outreach

February 12, 2010

The 2010 Census starts in March and ends in May; the challenge is to count every Californian in just a few short months.

Remember: Fewer Californians counted = Fewer federal funds for our state. This is no time for our state to pass on federal funds!

Need Materials in Spanish? One of our outreach challenges is finding materials in languages other than English. The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials is partnered with other Latino organizations to promote their Census campaign: Ya Es Hora. Their bilingual website offers outreach materials and sample Census forms in Spanish and English.

In Los Angeles County? The California Community Foundation is supporting outreach to and engagement of low-income diverse residents in targeted communities previously undercounted in the 2000 Census. Their website includes a number of helpful resources, including the following tips.

Simple ways your organization can integrate census outreach into your operations:

  • Hang a poster in your lobby.
  • Have your intake specialist ask clients if they have completed their Census forms.
  • Give Census buttons to staff to wear.
  • Include Census information in your e-newsletter, website, and other organization communications.
  • Participate in a local Complete Count Committee.
  • Provide volunteers for Census events.

Don't Forget: March 20 is Be Californian, Be Counted Day!
