Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee Takes on Housing

March 11, 2009

On March 3, 2009, the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee focused their attention on veterans' housing, highlighting the need for more state action and investment to address the needs of ALL California veterans.

Committee Chair Mary Salas emphasized the need for state departments and their programs to better align with the actual housing needs of the state's veteran population; specifically that the state needs to direct resources to multifamily rental homes and homeless programs if it really want to be responsive to what most veterans truly need.

Several pieces of legislation will likely arise from the committee and other legislators to address these problems. Most notably, Housing CA hopes that SB 500 (Steinberg) will address the needs of California's most-disadvantaged veterans by providing a permanent revenue stream for state investment in building more affordable places to live.

Housing CA will keep you posted on other legislation that may help homeless veterans.
