Housing California is an advocacy organization working on policy and public education, so we do not maintain a comprehensive list of all resources that might be available. We also do not manage any housing or have rental assistance to offer. However, we do refer people to housing organizations and resources that may be helpful. Please follow these links for more information about what you are looking for:
Rental and Non-Profit Managed Homes
- NEW! California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) allows you to search by county for affordable rentals (apartments) for low- and very-low income Californians.

EAH is one of the largest and most respected nonprofit housing development corporations in the State of California. EAH has developed over 4,300 units and manages more than 5,400 units throughout California and in Hawaii.

Eden Housing, Inc. revitalizes communities through affordable housing development and management as well as social services that meet the needs of lower income people.

LINC Housing provides housing for people underserved by the marketplace. Their communities are known for excellent design, outstanding management, and life-enhancing services.

Section 8 and Public Housing
- Affordable Housing Online is an online resource to help you learn more about Section 8 and find available affordable apartments that may accept Section 8.
- US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) list of housing authorities in California can help locate them in your area.
- HUD's Low-rent Apartment Search can assist in finding Section 8 Project-Based Units, which are government-subsidized apartments that are cheaper than market-rate units.
First-Time Homebuyers Programs
- California Housing Finance Agency is a valuable resource for first time homebuyers.
- HUD California is HUD's page for you if you want to buy a home and need a low-interest loan or first-time homebuyers counseling.
- Habitat for Humanity builds homes for low-income people, with the assistance of the future owners. To find the group closest to you, click on "Find Your Local Habitat Affiliate."
